Individual DBT Skills Training

In addition to individual psychotherapy, I offer individual DBT skills training. These sessions involve teaching specific sets of skills in four key areas:

  • Mindfulness (how to focus on your current experience, deliberately, without judgment).

  • Emotion Regulation (how to understand your emotions, change and reduce vulnerability to unwanted emotions).

  • Distress Tolerance (how to tolerate intense emotions without reacting in a way that worsens the situation).

  • Interpersonal Effectiveness (how to communicate effectively and get your interpersonal needs met).

These "class-like" sessions are more structured compared to individual therapy, with a set agenda for each session, and homework to help strengthen the skills learned. They may be a good supplement to individual therapy for any one who can benefit -- indeed, DBT skills have been found to help individuals with a range of emotional conditions. Additionally, they may be an alternative to group DBT skills training for clients in full-model DBT who prefer an individual setting.
